Celebrating and Sharing Good Practices in a Synodal Church

November 19, 2025

The focus this week is on Europe. Fr. Max Stetter is a founding member of ICRN and will be speaking to us from Augsburg, Germany, about how clergy can be supported in a synodal Church. The second element is from the School for Synodality [ serving England and Wales], which has produced a presentation on their Toolkit for Parish Pastoral Councils.

Be watching for the rest of the series on Nov. 26 and Dec 3 (consecutive Wednesdays), where speakers will give us information on: Archdiocese of Brisbane, CELAM, and the work in Latin America with Rafael Luciani, and creating synodal parishes in the U.S. with Robert Choiniere and Sr. Donna Ciangio.

Synodal Response to Laudato Si

November 19, 2025

It’s been 10 years since Pope Francis released his encyclical, Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home. This webinar will explore the synodal process involved in developing a Laudato Si’ Action Plan. Proven plans drawing on experiences from the Brisbane Archdiocese, including Brisbane Catholic Education, will be a focus of discussion, as will be how the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission in Brisbane helped with this process.

With an ever-increasing number of schools listening to student voices and developing their own plans in response to Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum, this webinar will demonstrate how a discernment process can lead to effective action planning.

Hosting the webinar will be Alice Carwardine. Joining Alice is Emma Beach, Justice, Ecology and Peace Project Officer for the Brisbane Archdiocese and Executive Officer for the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission, Brisbane.

CELAM’s and Latin America’s commitment to the third phase of the Synod

CELAM and Latin America are involved in two key projects: The first is the synodalization of ecclesial structures, particularly Episcopal Conferences and Seminaries throughout Latin America. More information will follow in this.

The second is the “Together” Synodal Ecosystem for the Pan-American Region, which Rafael Luciani presented to Pope Leo. He was very supportive, recognizing it as a unique collaboration that brings together the Latin American experience of synodality with that of the U.S. and Canada. If you’re interested in registering, go to https://together.celam.org.

This course will cover key elements of the Final Document of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. Members of the Synod’s General Secretariat, including Cardinals Mario Grech, Jean-Claude Hollerich, and Sr. Nathalie Becquart XMCJ, will give presentations.

A series of 10-minute videos in various languages, created to explain the essential content of the Final Document, will be included. The idea is that these materials will become educational tools for formation programs around the world.

One More Step Forward

His initiative marks another step forward for the Latin American and Caribbean Church toward encouraging global collaboration—especially from the Pan-American context—while helping make the third phase of the Synod on Synodality a reality. The entire journey is set to culminate in 2028 with the grand World Ecclesial Assembly in Rome.

Together, Juntos, Insieme

CELAM worked together with the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, the Latin American Confederation of Religious Men and Women, and the American Synodality Observatory to create Together.

The project will be in different languages, and its goal is to construct a “network of networks” in theology and pastoral ministry. Together will promote programs of formation and practical engagement with synodality across the Pan-American region.

Already Underway

The first part of the project consists of a large, free online course with more than 30 Synod experts and participants, along with representatives from other synodal processes, such as the Italian Synod. Tens of thousands of participants from around the world are expected. This article is in the Vatican Newsletter. You can keep up-to-date by subscribing to their daily newsletter. The Spirit Still Speaks: New Voices for Reform

November 19, 2025

Join FutureChurch for “The Spirit Still Speaks: New Voices for Reform” – a powerful conversation with a panel of young thinkers and activists who are doing their part to shape the future of the Church. Katie Gordon, Maxwell Kuzma, Medene Presley, and Yunuen Trujillo will share their experiences, insights, and hopes for a more just, inclusive, and Spirit-led Church. Guided by moderator Shannon K. Evans, this dialogue will highlight the voices of a new generation of reformers who are challenging the status quo and calling the Church to deeper faithfulness, courage, and commitment to the gospel.

About our panel:

Shannon K. Evans is the spirituality and culture editor at National Catholic Reporter and the author of the books The Mystics Would Like a Word, Feminist Prayers for My Daughter, and Rewilding Motherhood. With interest in ecofeminism, social change, and contemplative practice, Shannon leads workshops and retreats across the country that spark curiosity and compassion. She and her family live in central Iowa.

Katie Gordon is a spiritual seeker inspired by monastic tradition. She is the Coordinator of Monasteries of the Heart, an online movement that translates Benedictine wisdom for contemporary seekers. Katie often experiments with new ways of co-creating community outside traditional religious forms, including her previous projects, such as Nuns & Nones and the Formation Project. Benedict most inspires her as a model of “living otherwise” today, and writes about this and more on her Substack, Following the Monastic Impulse.

Maxwell Kuzma is a writer, advocate, and podcast host exploring what it means to be transgender, Catholic, and committed to justice. A columnist for National Catholic Reporter and board member of DignityUSA, he centers LGBTQ+ voices in the Church and reimagines Catholic theology through a liberatory lens. He has been interviewed by the press, including the NY Times and the BBC, on queer and trans Catholic identity, church reform, and LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Medene J.R. Presley is from Sacramento, CA; born and raised in the Afro-Pentecostal Christian tradition, but in 2018, was received into the Catholic Church while studying in seminary. He holds a Bachelor’s of Psychology from William Jessup University; a Master’s of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology, and is currently pursuing a second Master’s in Clinical Psychology at Loyola Marymount University. Medene researches the integration of psychology and theology, moral/practical theology, and pastoral counseling. He is the co-founder of the God Talk with Medene and James podcast. Moreover, he is a religious educator, campus minister, and community service director at a private Catholic high school in Los Angeles.

Yunuen Trujillo is a lay minister, faith-based community organizer, and immigration attorney. With over 15 years of experience in young adult ministry, she currently serves as the Religious Formation Coordinator (Spanish) for the Catholic Ministry with Lesbian and Gay Persons of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Yunuen has worked with L.A. Voice PICO, a faith-based organization focused on creating a society that reflects the dignity of all, advocating for immigration reform, criminal justice reform, and increased education funding. She is a board member of New Ways Ministry and FutureChurch. Yunuen is also the author of LGBT Catholics: A Guide to Inclusive Ministry, published in English and Spanish by Paulist Press.

Advent 2025: Entering into the Mystery of the Cosmic Christ

Sundays, November 23 & 30, and December 5, 14, 21

Join FutureChurch beginning on the Solemnity of Christ the King and throughout Advent on Sunday nights for our Online Liturgy and Faith Sharing, as we explore the mystery of the Cosmic/Universal Christ. Drawing on the rich theologies and spiritualities of writers like Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Ilia Delio, and Richard Rohr, we’ll reflect on how the Christ who has been present since the beginning of creation continues to be revealed in our evolving universe and in each of us today. Each week, a member of our virtual community will lead us in prayer and share how the Cosmic Christ informs their spirituality. Prepare your heart for the Incarnation in a way that expands our wonder, deepens our connections, and renews our hope for all creation.

Praying with the Shepherd Within: Embracing the Incarnational Principle to bring about Fullness of Life

December 9, 2025

FutureChurch welcomes Father Anne to lead an Advent evening of reflection.

Join Father Anne for an evening of reflection on the Incarnation to celebrate the ongoing mystery of Advent. Together, we will explore some of the principles in her new book, The Shepherd Within, and carve out quiet time during this busy season to invite God to minister to us and teach us about God’s essential drive to incarnate into our lives to bring about goodness. (The book is not required to attend.)

*This evening of reflection will alternate between presentation by Father Anne and moments for quiet personal reflection/journaling during the first hour (8-9 pm ET). After the first hour, attendees are invited to stay online for an optional time of faith-sharing and discussion (9 – 9:30 pm ET).

Father Anne was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 2021 through the reform movement known as the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests. Because the Roman Catholic Church prevents the full participation of women in Church life, Father Anne was forced to choose between obedience to God and obedience to Church law. Choosing God, she was excommunicated, ending her career in the Church she loves. She now devotes her life to gender justice in one of the most powerful institutions in the world. Father Anne has a Master of Divinity from Jesuit School of Theology and a Master of Arts in Rhetoric and Writing Studies from San Diego State University. Her deepest desire is to serve as a parish priest in the Roman Catholic Church. She works for the day this dream comes true.
