Catholic Women Striking from Church Involvement during the Month of May

Women are the lifeblood of the Church

We will make our presence known by our absence!

It is time to boycott the institutional Church. If women stopped showing up for Church, stopped working for the diocese, stopped donating, the institution would screech to a halt. Women must refuse to participate in our own oppression. Without women, the pews and the collection baskets would be nearly empty.

Starting on May 3 (World Day of Prayer for Vocations), the entire month of May will launch coordinated, global, prophetic demonstrations or witnesses demanding women’s equality in the Roman Catholic Church through strikes, re-directions of resources, and radical acts.

We find inspiration and hope in the Maria 2.0 movement that started last May in Germany, and continues to be a witness for equality through demonstrations and courageous dialogue for women in the German Church. We are strengthened by the support of numerous other reform organizations in this effort and we ourselves are joining in this movement.

Francis wants us to move away from that monarchical model

After extensive discussion about Querida Amazonia, the strategy team and advisors of Catholic Church Reform Int’l have moved from passionate disappointment in Pope Francis to a realization that it not his style to make a papal decree about such critical matters as married priesthood and the role of women. The church he is advocating is a synodal church, i.e. one that walks together.

“I think the pope is looking for a deeper change,” said Fr. Joe Healey, our associate in Nigeria. “He wants us to move away from that monarchical model and engage the whole church in the process of discernment on issues like bringing back the female diaconate. You can’t achieve synodality if you continually look to the pope to make the tough calls.

Looking back over the year – 2019

Clerical Sex Abuse Scandal Despite the slowness of reforming our Church, some changes are beginning to take place. No doubt, the entire year has been overshadowed by the clergy sex abuse scandal. Tribunals are slowly being established in dioceses around the globe though only headed by laity in not-nearly-enough instances. We’re happy to see Francis lift the papal secrecy rule on this abuse. Follow Australia’s lead, New Zealand implemented own Royal Commission to investigate this matter. So far, 1400 victims have come forward to talk to the Commission. The members plan to have a temporary report out by the end of 2020 and the final by 2023. There is talk among the laity of this also leading to a Plenary Council for this country.

Come to the U.S. Peoples Synod

Not since Vatican II has there been a groundswell of bishops willing to respond to the rumblings of the Spirit among the people. Relying on the bishops for initiative is like waiting for Godot. We need more initiative from the grass roots.

The American Catholic Council is organizing such an initiative to give voice to rumblings of the Spirit among the people, picking up on its 2011 conference in Detroit. The first step is to get really good at listening in small groups. Not dialogue as much as listening to one another. It isn’t a conference but a “working weekend” to learn listening skills well enough as a foundation to practice the art of “listening circles” and return home to put them into practice.

Statement of the Indian Women Theologians’ Forum (IWTF)

Annual Meeting, 28 April to 1 May 2019

We, the members of Indian Women Theologians Forum, gathered for our annual meeting from 28th April to 1st May 2019 at Good Shepherd Convent Bengaluru, and deliberated on the theme, “Towards a Gender Just Church”.

In India, and across the globe, we see more and more women reclaiming their voice and agency in the secular sphere. Their subjugation, marginalization and exploitation are increasingly being exposed, countered and challenged. Inclusion and diversity are now an essential part of any discourse on gender. The emergence of new movements like the #MeToo campaign, the moves for temple entry, the triple talaq debate and the many initiatives by ecumenical churches that are creating platforms for a collective assertion of the rights of women and sexual minorities are indicative of the decisive steps taken by women on the path towards greater freedom and affirmation of their personhood.
